On-site classes are offered yearlong on Tuesdays, with instruction offered at all skill levels. Thematic class content is frequently linked to science and social studies topics.
-
We offer state-adopted textbook materials, as well as assistance in designing custom study options for those who desire alternatives to standard instruction. After much research, we've chosen new adopted materials at all grade levels. Families will be able to get specific information from their Education Coordinators, and we anticipate including information here as well. All About Reading replaced the Seedlings curriculum we've been using. Wonders, published by McGraw Hill, replaced Houghton Mifflin for grades 2-5, and StudySync, also from McGraw Hill, replaced Prentice Hall for the 6-8 graders.
-
Participating families have access to such online programs as Accelerated Reader and Typing Club. Our Education Coordinators facilitate the enrollment in these programs, most of which require a login password.
-
Archives of previously self-published writing packets consisting of detailed instructional material for various genres of writing and the CyberWriter program calendars are available at left.
-
Parents are encouraged to seek and use the large variety of supplemental instruction and resources that are available via online sources. Education Coordinators provide information for those who wish to use the sites requiring login.
Assessments
Language Arts assessment is done through our computerized on-site STAR testing that works in conjunction with Accelerated Reader, as well as testing done each spring through the State Department of Education CST program. In addition, families can arrange to meet by appointment with one of our reading specialists.

Wonders Curriculum
For 2nd - 5th Grade

Hickman Charter School adopted the McGraw Hill “Wonders” curriculum for English Language Arts in 2017, for use by students in second through fifth grade. We have assembled a variety of resources to assist families who choose this option for language arts.
The program includes six units of study for each school year. Each unit consists of teaching material for 5 short stories (one per week)and a review week. Detailed lesson plans are available either via links on the left, or as a preprinted item available at our annex. (Note that lesson plans are designed for a 4-day week to provide flexibility for those who which to participate in our Monday on-site classes, or pursue other study alternatives one day each week.
The “core” curriculum includes three components: a student text, a practice book, and an answer key. Additionally, students will need a blank journal. Note that students will need to read more than just the short stories found in the text.
Additional reading selections can be chosen from the “Wonders Classroom” library books available in the annex, OR families may elect to complete a novel study of their choice during each unit. These additional readings should represent a balance of fiction and nonfiction selections.
