TK & Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) at Hickman Charter School is all about giving children and families the “gift of time” to grow socially, emotionally, and academically before starting kindergarten. Guided by the California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF), TK blends play-based learning with early skills in math, reading, science, arts, and social studies. We encourage activities that connect subjects—like using songs to teach science words or sorting games to build math and language skills—while honoring each child’s culture and language. The goal is to help children build confidence, curiosity, and readiness for school in a warm, inclusive environment. TK Families are supported with resources shared through ParentSquare, Parent Workshops and with meetings with their Education Coordinators. This includes monthly newsletters, a TK Box of supplies, various Workshops throughout the year and optional grade level enrichment classes.

Kindergarten (K)

Kindergarten at Hickman Charter School is all about building confidence, creativity, and a love of learning as children begin their elementary school journey. Guided by a developmental approach, Kindergarten blends play-based learning with early academic skills in reading, math, science, arts, and social studies. We encourage activities that engage all five senses—like hands-on experiments in science, multi-sensory lessons in reading and math, and creative projects that strengthen both large and small motor skills. The goal is to help children explore the world around them while developing the readiness skills they need for continued success in school.

Kindergarten families are supported with resources shared through ParentSquare, parent workshops, and regular meetings with their Education Coordinators. This includes monthly thematic packets, weekly enrichment classes, and field trips that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences.
