Classes & Resources

  • Yearlong on-site classes are available on Tuesdays for all grade levels. Our thematic offerings are supplemental to the student's core math program but will provide instruction and activities to address the major work of the grade level.

  • For students who might benefit  from a different approach, we make online offerings available to supplement our regular math programs. Click on the  tab at the left to learn more about our current offerings.

  • "Game of the Month" is a collection of simple games to be played at home. The Hickman Charter School Community of all ages will join together in playing one of these games each month, August – May. We hope playing these games throughout the month will enable our families to have fun and to try to master the strategies and number concepts that make for successful game playing.

  • In the 2012-2013 school year we introduced the "Math Spiral" to our families, and continue to provide current content, (access via links in the left column).  Its purpose is to provide small daily doses of mathematics practice to insure that each students has mastered the various skills necessary for success in the study of math. The Math Spiral is targeted toward students in grades 6-8, but Education Coordinators may determine it to be appropriate for younger students as well.

  • Newsletter Math was offered for several years, but has been replaced with newer options. The problems were designed to get kids thinking, solving and communicating their reasoning as they work through non-routine math problems.  Though we no longer offer Newsletter Math monthly, please refer to the archives in the left column to view some of the content.

  • As part of our parent training, we offer math workshops that provide ideas for breathing new life into at-home math instruction by promoting positive math experiences beyond the daily lessons.

6th-8th Grade Math Help

  • Services of credentialed math teachers are just an email away when our families need help with tricky spots in their math journeys. No matter what curriculum our families use, our teachers can provide help. To access their assistance,  families are asked to compose an email that includes both student and education coordinator name, curriculum being used, and the topic/specific details about the need for help, and send to the grade-specific email listed below. Families can expect to receive a response within a day.

Game of the Month

For all grades!

"Game of the Month" is a collection of simple games to be played at home. The Hickman Charter School Community of all ages will join together in playing one of these games each learning period, August – May.  We hope playing these games throughout the month will enable our families to have fun and to try to master the strategies and number concepts that make for successful game playing.

Our K-1 students will be playing number games from the "Tiny Polka Dot" game collection while our 2nd through 8th grade students will play classic games of strategy.  At the beginning of the year, each family is given the appropriate materials necessary to successfully play these games.

California Math Festivals

Math Festival

For 1st - 8th Grade

Math Festival is something that we've created for the 1st through 8th graders to experience as part of their morning classes on Tuesdays.  For 30 minutes once a month, the classes visit the "festival", which consists of various work stations that provide challenges to mathematical thinking, using a variety of hands-on materials.  Facilitators are available at each station to assist students, but they do so by guiding the students' thinking, instead of just providing answers. We were introduced to the Math Festival curriculum by its creator, Paul Giganti from the CA Math Council.

For more information about the Math Festival concept, visit their website. Within the site it is possible to navigate to the Number topic activities to learn specifics of what students do at the Math Festival.

Math Spirals

For 5th - 8th Grade

In the 2012-2013 school year we introduced the "math spiral" to our families. Its purpose is to provide small daily doses of mathematics practice to insure that each students has mastered the various skills necessary for success in the study of math. The Math Spiral is targeted toward students in grades 5-8, but Education Coordinators may determine it to be appropriate for younger students as well.

Newsletter Math

We enjoyed "Newsletter Math" for a number of years, but it's been replaced with more updated resources!  For those families who still wish to use some of our Newsletter Math, we're maintaining this page as an archive of the 2013-2014 Newsletter Math problems.
