Science at Hickman
The Hickman Charter Science team firmly believes that learning tied to a student’s experience is the most valuable type of learning there is. To insure that our families are prepared to engage in such learning, we have dedicated ourselves to providing a variety of activities that involve “doing” science throughout the course of the year. We are extremely proud of how our science program has expanded over the last few years here at Hickman. We at the science department are particularly proud of the facilities we enjoy, including our well-equipped science lab. Whether it’s a Hickman class, a take-home learning experience, or participation in Science Olympiad, our families are sure to find just what they need to enhance their study of science.
Discovery Education
Through Hickman Charter School's Discovery Streaming account, our families have access thousands of videos and other teaching resources to enhance the study of science, social studies, math, language arts and more. Ask your Education Coordinator for a passcode to establish an account and access this resource from any computer.
Generation Genius
New for HCS in 2019, Generation Genius is a science teaching resource for grades K-8 produced in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association. It brings school science standards to life through fun and educational videos paired with lesson plans, activities, quizzes, reading material, etc. This is a supplemental program that will enhance any science curriculum and addresses all the NGSS standards for grades K-8. Hickman Charter families can request a username and password from their Education Coordinators.
Mystery Science
We offer a subscription to Mystery Science for our enrolled families. Use the link in the online resources to the left to access a video tour that explains how Mystery Science is used. If, after viewing the video, interested families find that it might be useful, they can contact their Education Coordinator for information about signing up.
Hickman Annex Science Supplies
Common household items usually suffice when putting together the experiments found in most of our science curriculum. For those other experiments and projects that require more “sophisticated” tools and supplies, please fill out a science supply request form, which can be obtained in the Annex. We have equipment such as microscopes and scales, beakers, graduated cylinders, chemicals, etc. We will do our best to fill your order; and when a requested item is unavailable, an alternative will be suggested or included. Please plan well in advance so that we have time to fill your request.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad was created in 1983 in an effort to increase the interest in science and to provide an alternative to traditional science fairs and single-discipline tournaments. The Olympiad has members in all 50 states totaling more than 13,500 actively participating K-12 schools.
Each Middle School team (grades 6 – 8) of 15 prepares throughout the school year to compete in Science Olympiad tournaments held on local, state and national levels. Hickman Charter's Middle School team has won numerous local competitions and in addition has done very well at the State level.
The Elementary team (Grades 4 – 6) competes in a more laid-back competition. While this is the case, a yearlong commitment to practice and study is vital. The interest has been so high the past two years that we were able to have two full teams compete.
For more information on how to get involved in Science Olympiad, please contact your EC.

Elementary School Team
Grades 4-6
Hickman Charter School is proud to offer Science Olympiad for our elementary students, grades 4-6. The HCS team is managed by team coaches, but each event is actually instructed by parents. Participation requires a yearlong commitment by both students and parents. Also, practicing and studying with assigned partners is crucial to our program's success. Please consider the high level of commitment required for this opportunity carefully before deciding to sign up.
If you are interested in joining our Elementary Science Olympiad team, please contact your EC and fill out our Interest Form. Your student's name will be added to the interest list, along with the date submitted, to be considered for one of the available spots. All returning team members will be offered a place on the team before making additional spots available. You will be contacted in October regarding your status on the interest/wait list.
Elementary Science Olympiad Competition: First/Second Saturday in April.

Middle School Team
Grades 6-8
Each middle school team of up to 15 students prepares throughout the year to compete in Science Olympiad tournaments held on regional, state, and national levels. Participants partner up to compete in a variety of events which challenge students to design and build, conduct laboratory experiments, and study challenging science disciplines. Hickman Charter’s team has won numerous Stanislaus Regional Competitions and our students have experienced great individual success at the State Finals. Science Olympiad offers a powerful opportunity for our parent educators to participate in raising the level of scientific awareness and academic achievement for their students while at the same time promoting cooperative learning and competitive team spirit!

Hickman Charter School students and families make a yearlong commitment of time and energy to Science Olympiad - and the rewards of advancing students' knowledge and enthusiasm for the sciences are lifelong!
HCS SciOly Coaches and teachers assist in obtaining study materials and resources and providing practice space and event coaching. Parents take on the responsibility of being the primary "event coaches" for their students. Event preparations including studying, building, practicing, and logging data take place throughout the school year, requiring coordination of face-to-face sessions with event partner(s) on and off campus. The combined efforts of HCS staff, students, and our valued parents combine for team success!
